Bus Carrying Young Chinese Students Hits Tree
The accident was reported at 5:36 p.m. in the area of Highway 41 and Road 630.
California Highway Patrol said the 33-passenger white chartered bus returning from Yosemite National Park was heading down toward Oakhurst when the driver entered a curve at allegedly unsafe speed.
The 53-year-old Kehong Niu, of Alhambra, then veered off the west side of the road and slammed the right side of the bus into a large tree. The bus landed on its wheels in the southbound lane.
As per the article, the bus was carrying 22 people including the driver. The others were only identified as a group of Chinese students, 12 to 15 years old, and four additional chaperones.
Four passengers were seriously injured while six others suffered injuries ranging from minot to moderate degree. Niu survived the collision with moderate injuries.
CHP affirmed that five victims were taken to Community Regional and the remaining seven were transported to Valley Children’s Hospital. One child died after being hospitalized while a 13-year-old was listed in critical condition.
Six patients at the Valley Children’s are described as 13 years old and one is 12. They were reportedly not badly hurt.
Meanwhile, CHP added that Niu was going about 35 to 40 mph north of Lewis Creek at the time. Niu told ABC 30 that he was inexperienced as a commercial driver.
The bus, owned by Top Line Charter of Monterey Park in Los Angeles, was equipped with seat belts.
Speed is being considered to be a factor in the incident which remains under investigation.
