Teen Driver Detained After Hit-and-run Crash into Students at Bus Stop
FRESNO, Calif. (Sept. 7, 2023) – Eleven students were injured after a teenage driver crashed into a bus stop at Cedar Avenue and Tulare Avenue in Fresno.
The car versus pedestrians collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6th at a bus stop near Roosevelt High School, according to a report in Your Central Valley News.
A 16-year-old boy was allegedly driving southbound on Cedar Avenue in a black pickup truck at reckless speed. He reportedly lost control and jumped the curb before hitting a group of 20 students standing near a FAX bus stop. The driver and his 14-year-old sister riding as a passenger in the truck, exited the vehicle and fled the scene. A family member picked them up and drove off. However, witnesses and school staff managed to pull the car over and detain the suspect. Police arrested the suspect on hit-and-run charges.
Meanwhile, paramedics responded and transported eleven students to hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from back pain to a broken leg. There were no life-threatening injuries among the pedestrians.
Investigators are working on the felony, hit-and-run case and will determine if drugs and or alcohol were factors in the crash. The family member who picked up the teenage suspect may also face charges.
The case remains under investigation.
