Jesus Avalos, 51, Arrested
The collision occurred around 1 p.m. near Avenue 50.
As per Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Coachella police said a blue VW Beetle was rear-ended by a GMC pickup truck on Highway 86. The Beetle rolled off the street with its two occupants pinned inside while the truck fled the scene.
The two victims were extricated from the car and was transported to a local hospital with major, but non-life-threatening injuries. Their names and condition at this time remain unknown.
When officials arrived, the truck was gone, but the Beetle had rolled off the street, trapping two people inside. The California Department of Forestry cut them out of the car, and they were moved to a local hospital with injuries described as “major” but not life-threatening.
According to The Desert Sun, police on Monday found the truck, which is owned by 51-year-old Jesus Avalos, of Indio. He was believed to be the driver of the truck during the accident.
Avalos was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. The investigation is ongoing as the authorities consider alcohol or drugs as a factor in the incident.
