LOS BANOS, Calif. (June 21, 2018) — A 26-year-old Bakersfield man and his 36-year-old female passenger were killed in a crash Wednesday night with a suspected DUI, wrong-way driver on the Interstate 5 Freeway, according to a report by the Modesto Bee.
The crash took place about 11:30 p.m. last night near Henry Miller Avenue. Humberto Tovar, 34, of Patterson, was reportedly driving the wrong way on the freeway in the No. 1 lane when his 20o8 Nissan crashed head-on into a 2018 Toyota occupied by the two people who died.
The impact caused the Toyota to end up in the No. 2 lane where it was struck by a 2016 Freightliner truck. Julio Gamboa, 44, of Wilmington, was driving the big rig truck southbound on the freeway. The two Bakersfield residents were not wearing seat belts and died at the scene. The report stated that Gamboa was not injured, however, Tovar suffered major injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Police believe that alcohol was a factor and are considering DUI and other charges against Tovar.
Traffic Accident Investigation
At this time, the crash is under investigation by police to determine fault. The initial investigation has determined that Humberto Tovar was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and driving the wrong way in traffic. He is most likely going to be determined at fault for this deadly crash.
