Christian Martinez, 20, of Moreno Valley and Harry Mulder Jr., 43, of Hemet Killed in Separate Crashes
MORENO VALLEY, California (October 13, 2014) – Two men were killed in separate accidents in the community of Moreno Valley this past weekend, according to a press release by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner.
Police responded to the first crash on Friday about 11:23 p.m. on the westbound State Route Highway 60, just east of Perris Boulevard. Christian Martinez, 20, of Moreno Valley was a passenger in a 1997 Honda Civic that crashed into the center divider. He got out of the car and was standing in the carpool lane when he was hit by another driver in a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta who also hit the left side of the Honda. He was pronounced dead at 11:38 p.m. at the scene of the accident.
Paramedics transported two passengers who were riding in the Volkswagen to Riverside Community Hospital where they were treated for minor to moderate injuries. The drivers of both vehicles were not injured in the crash.
The following day, Harry Mulder Jr., 43, of Hemet was driving his 1990 Toyota sedan on Gilman Springs Road, about a third of a mile west of Jack Rabbit Trail when he was involved in a crash about 7:33 a.m.
Mulder reportedly veered into the dirt shoulder of the roadway and then back into westbound traffic where he was hit by a 2002 Chevrolet pick-up truck.
Mulder was transported by ambulance to Riverside County Regional Medical Center on Cactus Avenue in Moreno Valley. He died shortly after his arrival Saturday morning at 8:26 a.m., the coroner report said.
The driver of the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries in the crash.
Police will continue to investigate the circumstances and to determine liability for both of these fatal crashes and will issue a report with their findings.
“This is a tragedy for the families of these two men,” said Attorney James Johnson. “My condolences go out to them at this difficult time.”
