2024 SoCal Walk Like MADD at Granada Beach in Long Beach

Roughly $50K Raised to Help Victims of Drunk Driving

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2024) — The 2024 SoCal Walk Like MADD fundraiser held Saturday at Granada Beach in Long Beach raised roughly $53,000 to provide services to victims of drunk drivers.

The annual fundraiser, held on September 28th, 2024, brought together survivors of DUI crashes and the families of those who lost a loved one in a deadly crash.

“Today is really, important. Not only to bring awareness about drunk driving, it’s about healing, coming together, and remembering our loved ones, ” said one speaker who lost a son in a DUI crash. “It’s about having communication and fellowship. When you become a victim of such a tragic preventable crime, like drunk driving, we become a family.”

Sponsors this year included Waymo, ALADS, Los Angeles Police Command Officers Association, and Johnson Attorneys Group in Newport Beach.

Attendees were greeted by K-9 officers from the Garden Grove Police Department, an autonomous car was on display from Waymo, and there were plenty of booths from local sponsors including Cane’s, Tempoe, Grocery Outlet, and more.

This year the walk was dedicated to Ruby & Hart, the teenage children of Colin Campbel and Gail Lerner.

“On June 12, 2019, while driving from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree, our car was hit by a drunk and high driver going ninety miles an hour. The driver hit us at full speed, never touching the brakes. Both our beautiful and brilliant children, seventeen-year-old Ruby, and fourteen-year-old Hart, were killed. Ruby was a budding artist who had just received a merit scholarship to study over the summer at the Art Institute of Chicago, and Hart was a hilarious and inspired performer who could make anyone laugh. They were each other’s biggest fans. We love them and miss them and ache for them.” — Colin Campbel and Gail Lerner.

The event also had a Victim Photo Wall featuring photos honoring and remembering local victims of impaired driving.

Finally, this year, the Long Beach Firefighters Association, Local 372, hosted lunch for participants.
