Car Hits Teen Riding Horse on Markham Street
MEAD VALLEY, Calif. (Sept. 24, 2018) — Three people including a 16-year-old girl riding a horse were injured Saturday night in a collision in the 21000 block of Markham Street, according to the CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department.
The collision took place about 8:16 p.m. when the vehicle struck the horse while reportedly speeding. The pregnant mare died of its injuries and the teenager and the driver who both suffered major injuries were transported to a hospital. The teen was celebrating her 16th birthday and there was a large gathering of people attending her nearby party. A third person suffered minor injuries and declined further treatment.
Police suspect the driver was under the influence of alcohol and or drugs at the time of the collision. They also believe the driver was traveling at 80 mph in a 45 mph zone.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is heading up the investigation.
At this time we do not know what led to this collision, nor who is responsible. There are certainly many unanswered questions such as whether and or not speed or alcohol were factors.
Mead Valley Crash Investigation
The collision remains under investigation by police to determine fault. At this time, it appears that the driver is going to be held responsible for this teenager’s injuries and the death of the horse.
We extend our prayers to the injured in hopes of a full recovery.
There are many steps that should be taken following a collision to ensure your legal rights are protected, but this can vary depending on the circumstances.
An injured person should seek out immediate and ongoing medical care until they are completely better. If someone has died, a wrongful death claim may be pursued by surviving family members against those responsible and or their insurance company.
