3 Semi Trucks in Fatal Crash on Interstate 40, Desert Oasis Rest Area

Fatal Fiery Crash on I-40 on Friday Evening
HECTOR, Calif. (April 20, 2026) — A deadly collision involving three semi-trucks sparked a large fire Friday night and forced the full closure of Interstate 40 near the Desert Oasis Rest Area in the community of Hector, according to authorities.
The crash was reported around 6:54 p.m. on April 17 along the westbound lanes of I-40, according to dispatch logs from the California Highway Patrol. Initial reports indicated a crash between multiple big rigs, with at least one person found down in the roadway.
Within minutes, responding units determined that one of the vehicles was fully engulfed in flames. Crews at the scene initially located two individuals and reported that the fire had begun spreading into nearby brush, creating hazardous conditions.
Thick smoke from the blaze reduced visibility for motorists in both directions, prompting authorities to shut down all lanes of the freeway.
By 7:53 p.m., officials requested the coroner and notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, confirming that the crash was fatal.
Around 8:00 p.m., a traffic alert was issued stating that both eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near the rest area would remain closed while emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire and clear the wreckage. Drivers were urged to avoid the area and expect significant delays, with westbound traffic being diverted.
An update later indicated that eastbound lanes reopened at approximately 8:19 p.m., though westbound lanes remained impacted as cleanup operations continued.
Fire crews requested additional heavy equipment, including loaders, to assist with containment and removal efforts.
Authorities have not yet released information about the victim or victims. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
