The CHP reports a 26 percent drop in traffic fatalities throughout California highways over the 2023 Memorial Day weekend compared to the previous year.
The California Highway Patrol reported 33 people died in 27 collisions over the 3-day holiday weekend this year compared to 45 people killed in 2022. Also, this compares to a rise in the death toll last year by a staggering, 30 percent over the 2021 fatalities in the Golden State, the CHP said.
Additionally, the CHP reports they made 1118 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI) this year compared to just 900 DUI arrests in 2022.
“While it’s good news that there is a drop in the fatality rate this year, it’s no comfort to those who lost a loved one in a crash this past weekend,” said Attorney James Johnson. “Drunk and drugged driving has must end if we are going to reduce the mortality rate here in California.”
