2 Killed, 9 Injured in Chain-Reaction, Pileup Crash
KERN COUNTY, Calif. (Jan. 9, 2024) — Two people died and nine were injured in a 35-vehicle chain-reaction crash Saturday on the Interstate 5 Freeway between Millux Road and Old River Road in Kern County.
The deadly crash occurred amid heavy fog at around 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 6th, roughly 20 miles north of the Grapevine, according to news reports. News reports stated visibility on the freeway was estimated to be from 10 to 100 feet at the time of the collision.
UPDATE: Man, Woman Killed in pileup crash are identified
It’s unknown exactly what initially set off the crash involving 17 vehicles and 18 big rig trucks, but officials say it was a massive chain-reaction collision. Also, the multi-vehicle crash occurred in the southbound lanes of the I-5 Freeway.
Authorities say it was a chaotic scene made worse when one truck hauling compressed natural gas became involved and led to police evacuating motorists amid triage for those injured. Meanwhile, bystanders that were not injured came to the aid of those who were hurt amid a plume of natural gas, officials said.
Nearly three dozen damaged cars and trucks were scattered across about a half mile of the freeway and some went off the road into the grass median.
Kern County fire officials reported two people died on scene and nine others were transported to hospital with minor to moderate injuries from the collisions.
Authorities had to close down the entire roadway due to the large scale traffic accident and subsequent cleanup and investigation.
