Pedestrians Hurt at Rodeo Nights, Holiday Lights Celebration
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Nov. 15, 2024) — Four pedestrians including a juvenile were injured when a carjacking suspect crashed a BMW into a crowd at the Rodeo Nights, Holiday Lights celebration in Beverly Hills.
The collision occurred around 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14th at Wilshire Boulevard and Camden Drive, shortly after a carjacking in the 400 block of North Bedford Drive in Beverly Hills, according to KTLA 5 News.
The 22-year-old suspect lost control of the vehicle he was stealing, went up onto a sidewalk and struck the pedestrians. The vehicle also crashed into a building amid crowds gathered for the annual holiday festival.
The Beverly Hills Police Department was headed to Bedford Drive after a report about the carjacking of a black BMW X3, when another call came in about pedestrians being hit in the area.
However, the driver exited the BMW and fled the scene on foot. He was located shortly after and arrested on charges including carjacking and hit-and-run causing injury.
The suspect was identified as James Portul, 22, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Finally, paramedics transported two men, a woman and a boy to a hospital for treatment.
