Retired San Jose Police Captain Among 5 Dead
CORNING, Calif. (August 2, 2023) — A retired San Jose police captain, Randall Schriefer, 52, of Morgan Hill, was among five people who died in a two-vehicle crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway just south of Corning.
The collision occurred around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 29th, just south of Liberal Avenue, according to Action News Now.
Two other men, a pregnant woman and a child also died in Saturday’s fatal crash on Interstate 5 Freeway.
Shawn Chastain, 48, of San Diego, and his three passengers, were driving a 2003 Infiniti northbound on the Interstate 5 when for unknown reasons he crossed over the center divide and collided with a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck pulling a trailer.
A retired San Jose police captain, Randall Schriefer, 52, of Morgan Hill, was driving the Dodge Ram and his wife, Kelly Schriefer, 48, who was a front seat passenger. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash and his wife was the sole survivor of the two-vehicle collision. She was transported to Enloe Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.
A statement from the San Jose Police Department reads: “Randall “Randy” Schriefer, who served our city with distinction and unwavering commitment for over 23 years.”
Meanwhile, the driver and his three passengers from the Infiniti, were all ejected from the car and died at the scene. None of them were wearing seatbelts, police said. Authorities released their names as Thomas Bruce 47, Patti Larsen, 36, who was seven months pregnant and an 8-year-old girl.
The CHP’s major accident investigative team (MAIT) is heading up the investigation.
It’s unknown at this time what factors contributed to the deadly crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Corning.
