6 Injured in Car Crash Melrose Avenue; DUI Driver Arrested Jan. 1, 2018

Uber Car Hit by DUI Driver; 4 Critically Injured

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 1, 2018) — A suspected DUI driver crashed into a shoe store and an Uber vehicle carrying four passengers on W. Melrose Avenue, according to a report by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Michael Steward Forno, 37, was arrested and charged with multiple criminal counts including DUI. He pleaded not guilty on Wednesday Jan. 3 and is due in court on Jan. 17 for a preliminary hearing in downtown Los Angeles, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The victims were described as three women and three men who ranged in age from their early 20s to early 30s.

The collision took place about 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day in the 7400 block of W. Melrose Avenue. Four of the six people hurt in the crash were critically injured.

Forno was allegedly drunk while driving a black Mercedes Benz SUV. He reportedly crashed into a Prius whose driver was working for Uber and then ran into a shoe store. The Mercedes overturned onto its roof and Forno tried to flee the scene. A tow truck driver who witnessed the collision, chased down the suspect and held onto him until police got there to arrest him.

Police are investigating the collision and so far they have learned the the same motorist caused a non-injury crash at the Magic Castle in Hollywood earlier in the night.

DUI Crash Accident Investigation

An investigation into liability for this collision is underway by police. There are still many unanswered questions surrounding this collision. At this time, we know that alcohol was a factor, however, there could also be traffic violations.

The first thing you should do is contact an attorney. Without the representation of a lawyer, insurance companies might make contact with you directly, and since they are trained to protect their best interests, this could mean a loss of rights on your behalf, especially if you unknowingly sign something that they didn't completely explain to you. Handling a personal injury claim by yourself is very difficult. You will deal directly with the insurance adjuster who is often trained to obtain the information they are not entitled to use. This information can negatively impact and de-value your case. Once your case is damaged, it is very difficult to repair it and usually costs you thousands of dollars less in a settlement.
