Driver Arrested on DUI Charges after Hitting 9 Pedestrians in Fullerton
FULLERTON, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2019) – Nine pedestrians were struck by a suspected drunk driver whose pickup truck jumped the sidewalk on West Santa Fe Avenue, police said.
The collision, which was reported at 1:48 a.m., took place at the time when restaurants and bars were closing and people were out walking. Christopher Solis, 22, of Anaheim, struck and injured the pedestrians with his red Toyota Tacoma. The pickup truck went up onto the sidewalk in this busy downtown area before hitting a tree at 100 W. Santa Fe Ave., just east of the Orange Freeway (57), according to the Fullerton Police Department.
Bystanders and police rushed to help multiple victims who were trapped underneath the vehicle. Bystanders lifted the vehicle to free them and pulled them out from underneath the pickup. A total of 10 people, between ages 18 and 49 years old, were transported to hospitals with moderate to critical-life threatening injuries, police said.
Christine Navarro, 21, a Cal Poly Pomona student, was identified as one of the injured by the Orange County Register. She suffered multiple injuries including a dislocated hip, a broken rib and multiple back fractures, but was in stable condition on Monday, police said.
Also hurt in the crash was an unidentified 21-year-old man who was in stable condition with unspecified injuries.
Three other vehicles were hit by the pickup truck and sustained minor to moderate damage.
Police arrested Solis on felony DUI charges that caused great bodily injury.
