Fatal Head-on Crash Highway 101, Canyon Road in Sonoma County
Fatal Wrong-Way Driver Collision
SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. (July 14, 2023) — A wrong-way driver died and one person was injured in a crash on Highway 101 Thursday night near Geyserville in Sonoma County.
The fiery crash occurred around 9:44 p.m. on July 13th, roughly a mile north of Canyon Road, according to a California Highway Patrol dispatch.
One Killed, One Critically Injured
CHP operators received a call about the wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 shortly before the collision. The driver eventually crashed into a southbound car and at least one of the vehicles caught on fire. Two people were trapped inside one of the cars. One person from the victim’s vehicle was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of major injuries. The driver from the wrong-way vehicle died at the scene.
Police issued a SigAlert at 10:21 p.m. for traffic in both directions of Highway 101 due to the road being blocked by vehicles and emergency responders.
The Highway 101 crash in Sonoma County remains under investigation.
