One Dead in Crash on Hwy 43 in Pond
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Jan. 17, 2024) — Adolfo Raya Jr., 38, of Shafter, died and two others were injured in a fatal multi-vehicle crash last Friday on Highway 43 and Pond Road in Pond.
The collision occurred at around 2:56 p.m. between a pickup truck and another motorist, roughly a 30-minute drive northwest of Bakersfield, according to the California Highway Patrol and KGET News.
The Shafter man was driving a silver Chevrolet pickup truck westbound on Pond Road and stopped at the intersection with Highway 43, police said. Next, Adolfo Raya Jr. drove the truck into the intersection where he collided with a northbound vehicle on Highway 43.
Both vehicles wound up on the northwest shoulder of Highway 43, however, a tire from the Chevrolet truck came off and hit two other vehicles.
Two Hospitalized, One Killed in Crash
Paramedics responded and confirmed the death of the Chevrolet’s driver, but his passenger Aldo Montoya survived with major injuries and was airlifted to Kern County Medical Center.

Meanwhile, the driver the other vehicle sustained moderate injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
There were no reported injuries from the two other vehicles hit by the tire.
Police closed down Highway 43 between Pond and Schuster roads to conduct an investigation into the fatal crash.
Finally, witnesses are asked to call the California Highway Patrol in Bakersfield at 661-396-6600.
