Major Traffic in San Rafael Due to Multi-Vehicle Collision

MARIN COUNTY, CA (May 2, 2025) — A five-vehicle crash early Friday morning temporarily shut down multiple lanes on southbound U.S. Highway 101 just south of Freitas Parkway in the San Rafael area of Marin County.

The collision caused major traffic delays during the morning commute, according to the California Highway Patrol report.

The crash, reported at around 7:23 a.m. on May 2nd, involved a black Mercedes SUV, a red SUV, a Toyota Tacoma, and a white Ford F-250, which sustained major front-end damage, the report said.

Emergency crews, including San Rafael Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene. Meanwhile, all southbound lanes were temporarily blocked due to the wreckage. One vehicle was smoking, but no serious injuries have yet been confirmed. Some of the involved vehicles were able to be driven from the scene, while others required towing.

By 7:42 a.m., lanes 1 and 2 were reopened to traffic, helping to ease the congestion.

Tow services from Corte Madera responded to the scene, and cleanup operations continued through the hour. CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.

Motorists are advised to continue using caution in the area as residual delays may persist.
