Deadly Collision on Interstate 280 Freeway in San Jose
San Jose, CA (May 8, 2025) — A fatal crash involving two vehicles shut down multiple lanes of southbound Interstate 280 near the Bird Avenue off-ramp Thursday evening in San Jose.
The collision, which occurred around 7:34 p.m. on May 8th, lead to hours of traffic disruption and a law enforcement response, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The drivers of a green Honda Civic and a white Ford F-150 pickup truck were involved. The Civic reportedly veered to the right shoulder, where a pregnant female was ejected and found unresponsive on the ground. Two children who were passengers in the Civic — ages 2 to 3 and 5 to 6 years old — survived with undisclosed injuries.
Emergency responders, including fire crews and medical personnel, arrived on the scene shortly after. Despite their efforts, the female victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The driver and passenger in the pickup truck did not suffer any serious injuries.
The collision initially blocked the slower lanes of the freeway, prompting a full closure of lanes 3 through 5. Traffic was backed up for miles as CHP and tow services worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the scene.
By 9:29 p.m., all lanes were reported open. The incident was officially cleared just before midnight.
CHP continues to investigate the circumstances leading to the crash. It is not yet clear if speed, impairment, or driver error played a role.
