Cyclist Killed in Atherton Bike Lane Crash; Attorney Urges Greater Safety Awareness
Atherton, CA (May 7, 2025) — A bicycle rider in a designated bike lane was struck by a vehicle in Atherton Wednesday at Middlefield Road and Prior Lane in what authorities are calling a tragic reminder of the dangers cyclists face on the road.
Atherton Police responded around 7:40 a.m. on May 7th to the Atherton intersection, where a southbound vehicle struck a bicyclist while turning onto Prior Lane. According to police, both the cyclist and driver were traveling in the same direction when the collision occurred.
The injured cyclist was transported to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead. The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Police confirmed that the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to have played a role in the crash.
Bicycle Safety in Atherton
This marks Atherton’s first traffic fatality of 2025.
In response to the incident, Attorney James Johnson, a personal injury lawyer and advocate for cyclist rights, emphasized the need for heightened awareness and legal protections.
“Cyclists have the legal right to use bike lanes safely, and drivers must remain vigilant—especially when making turns,” said Johnson. “This tragic loss underscores how a moment’s inattention can lead to irreversible consequences. We must prioritize safety for all road users.”
Authorities urge drivers to always check for cyclists before turning and to respect bike lanes as protected travel spaces.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact the Atherton Police Department.
