Fatal Bakersfield Pedestrian Accident South Union Avenue, Garden Drive (1/12)

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Jan. 12, 2026) — A fatal pedestrian accident happened early Monday on South Union Avenue and Garden Drive in Bakersfield.

A 25-year-old woman died in the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol dispatch log. The crash was reported at 6:17 a.m. on Monday, January 12, between a driver in a sedan and the pedestrian at the Bakersfield intersection.

A 68-year-old man driving a 2012 Toyota Yaris was heading southbound in the 5300 block of South Union Avenue. Authorities say they are investigating why the young woman was walking in the roadway, outside of a crosswalk. The driver told authorities she stepped directly into the path of the Toyota, according to CHP.

Sadly, the pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and police are investigating.

The coroner’s office responded, but it’s unknown if anyone else was hurt.
