4-Vehicle Crash on Highway 101 Near Story Road in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 29, 2026) — A four-vehicle crash on northbound U.S. Highway 101 near the Story Road off-ramp caused major traffic delays Wednesday morning after multiple lanes were shut down during the investigation.

The collision was reported on July 29th at approximately 7:31 a.m. on northbound Highway 101 just south of the Story Road off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Initial reports indicated the crash involved a silver Toyota Tundra, a black Mercedes-Benz SUV, a green Mazda SUV and a black Toyota SUV. Dispatch logs later described the collision as a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles, with several sustaining major damage, including significant front-end and rear-end impacts.

By 7:45 a.m., CHP officers had closed lanes 1, 2 and 3, leaving only the far-right lane open to traffic. The lane closures prompted officials to request a Caltrans message sign alerting motorists to the backup.

Multiple tow trucks were dispatched to remove the damaged vehicles from the freeway.

Authorities did not immediately report any injuries, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Traffic delays continued through the morning commute as crews worked to clear the scene.
