Vanessa Wheyland Killed in Carlsbad Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident
Suspect Fernando Saldana, 26, Arrested and Charged with Murder
CARLSBAD, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2026) — Vanessa Wheyland, a 45-year-old Carlsbad woman, died Tuesday evening after she was struck by a driver while crossing Carlsbad Boulevard, according to a press release by the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
Wheyland was injured at approximately 7:45 p.m. Sept. 15, 2026, in the 3800 block of Carlsbad Boulevard near Redwood Avenue, the report said.
Meanwhile, emergency crews were at the scene helping the injured woman. She was transported to Sharp Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside for treatment. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at approximately 8 p.m.
Suspect Charged with Murder, DUI, Manslaughter
The vehicle involved in the fatal crash was later located roughly a mile from the crash scene. Shortly after, police were able to locate the suspect, Fernando Saldana, 26, of Escondido.
Police arrested Saldana and booked him into Vista Detention Facility. Due to a previous DUI conviction, he is charged with murder, as well as leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury or death, DUI causing injury or death, and gross vehicular manslaughter.
