Fatal Pedestrian Accident on I-80 Freeway, I-780 in Vallejo

Tesla in Self-Driving Mode Hits Man, 71, Crossing Interstate 80

VALLEJO, Calif., (October 22, 2026) — A fatal crash occurred early Thursday morning involving a pedestrian and a white Tesla sedan on the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 Freeway, at the eastbound Interstate 780 junction in Vallejo, Solano County.

The 71-year-old man was struck by the Tesla operating in full self-driving autonomous mode as he was crossing the I-80 Freeway.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident happened on Oct. 22nd at approximately 2:34 a.m. on the westbound I-80 to eastbound I-780 connector. Emergency services were called to the scene, where they found the pedestrian in the gore area of the exit #3 lane. Despite efforts, the individual was pronounced dead at 2:49 a.m.

The collision blocked the Nos. 2 and 3 lanes, causing significant traffic disruptions as authorities worked to clear the scene. The white Tesla involved was reportedly stopped on the right-hand side of the road following the accident. The driver of the Tesla, a 26-year-old San Francisco man, told authorities the car was in self-driving mode. The Tesla recorded the incident on its dashcam and showed the vehicle was traveling at 70 mph when the pedestrian stepped into the roadway from the right shoulder. The video showed the car braked and steered to the left to avoid hitting the man, but its right front side hit the pedestrian. The victim was struck by a second vehicle while down in the roadway.

The identity of the deceased has not been publicly released at this time. Vallejo Fire and other emergency units responded promptly to the incident. CHP continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to this fatal collision and is seeking any potential witnesses who may have information regarding the accident.
