SANTA MONICA: Daniel Thomas Killed Hit-and-Run Civic Center; Absadi Kidane, 21, Arrested
SANTA MONICA, California (March 22, 2017) – A man identified as Daniel Thomas, 40, had been standing at a parking booth pay station when he was run down by a hit-and-run driver and killed Tuesday afternoon at the Civic Center parking lot in the 1800 block of Main Street, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.
The fatal incident was reported about 3:30 p.m., near Olympic Boulevard. The suspected driver was reportedly entering the parking lot from Fourth Street. He allegedly sped through the parking lot westbound, through a parking lot gate and then hit Thomas who had been standing at the parking booth.
The suspect got out of his vehicle after he struck a parked car and a police chase ensued. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Absadi Kidane, was arrested following a struggle with police officers.
Paramedics responded to the scene finding the 40-year-old man unresponsive and in critical condition. He was rushed to a hospital where he later died of his injuries.
Kidane was arrested on the following charges: homicide, vehicular manslaughter,driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, felony hit-and-run and forcibly resisting arrest.
