LOCATION: Ukiah, Mendocino County

DATE OF COLLISION: Monday, June 11th

June 14, 2018- According to the Press-Democrat, three people were injured following a collision between a big rig biodiesel truck and a Honda sedan on southbound Highway 1 near Iversen Road.

Authorities responded to the collision which transpired in the afternoon at 2:41 p.m. precisely.

Driver of Biodiesel Big Rig Triggers Crash

According to the Press-Demoncrat, a man identified as Edward Grace, 64, of Santa Cruz, had been operating the big rig headed northbound before crossing over into oncoming traffic into southbound lanes. A Honda driven by Victor Lara, 20, had been traveling southbound at the time and attempted to avoid the accident but was unable to do so.

Lara’s vehicle careened off the freeway rolling over coming to rest on its roof in a ditch adjacent to the road. Both Lara and his passenger Ana Lisa Rea, 17, were injured and taken to the hospital at Redwood Coast Medical Services.

Meanwhile, Grace suffered moderate injuries after his truck landed on its driver’s side also in a ditch. He was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Based on the information provided in the report, the company employing the big rig biodiesel truck will likely be held liable for the collision. A thorough investigation will ensue, however, as photos that were taken of the scene and compiled evidence will help investigators determine the ultimate cause of the collision. Police officials will examine all potential factors including speed, the possible involvement of alcohol or drugs, or whether or not there were any mechanical issues with either vehicle. The investigation will also consist of looking at measurements of evidence left by both the big rig and the Honda such as point of impact, final resting positions of each vehicle, skid marks, and gouge marks.

In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing may have been a factor, Victor Lara and Ana Lisa Rea will be entitled file a personal injury lawsuit against the company employing the truck driver responsible for this collision. Those not found liable may seek compensation for damages including medical expenses and hospital bills, pain and suffering, and lost future income.
