Barbara Newton Killed in Crash Near Wilbur Springs Fire Station
COLUSA COUNTY, Calif. (June 18, 2018) – Barbara Newton, 52, of Orangevale, died and five others were hurt Sunday afternoon in a head-on crash between two motorists just southwest of Williams, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision took place just before 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 16 and 20, near the Cal Fire Wilbur Springs Station in Colusa County.
Police say Newton was driving her 2016 Ford fusion eastbound on Highway 20 when she suddenly drifted to the right shoulder. She struck a guardrail, lost control and collided head-on with a westbound 2006 Honda Odyssey. There were five people from the Stockton area in the Odyssey including Abel Martir, 44, Monica Martir, 43, Isaias Martir, 18, and two 15-year-old girls.
The driver, Abel, suffered major injuries and Monica and one of the teenage girls suffered moderate injured. Two others who were passengers suffered no injuries.
The police dispatch stated they had to completely close Highway 20, just east of Highway 16, between 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Traffic Accident Investigation
At this time, it appears that Barbara Newton was responsible for the collision due to unknown reasons. Her vehicle veered into the path of the other motorist and caused the crash.
