Driver Killed in Crash with Wrong-way Driver is ID’d
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (July 31, 2023) — Abel Bermudez Griego, 57, of Los Angeles, has been identified as the driver who died in a crash with a wrong-way driver on the 805 Freeway last week in San Diego.
Also, the suspected wrong-way driver, Fernando Goneortiz, 29, was arrested Wednesday after the crash near the San Ysidro Port of Entry near the border with Mexico.
The collision occurred in the southbound lanes of the I-805 Freeway on Wednesday, July 26th, according to CBS 8 News.
Fernando Goneortiz Injured
Police say Fernando Goneortiz was driving a white Audi sedan northbound in the southbound lanes of the 805 Freeway when he attempted to avoid crossing the border and made a U-turn. He collided head on with a blue Honda van. Abel Bermudez Griego, 57, of Los Angeles, who was driving the van, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the collision.
Goneortiz suffered major non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment and later arrested on felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges.
Investigators are working on the case.
