Driver Stopped to Help Dog on Highway 74, Struck and Killed
MENIFEE, Calif. (Feb. 16, 2019) — Abel Soto, 25, of Corona, died when he was struck by a vehicle after stopping to help a dog on Highway 74.
The collision took place in the westbound lanes of Highway 74, between Menifee Road and Briggs Road.
Police say Soto had been driving his vehicle eastbound on Highway 74 when he saw the dog in the roadway. He pulled over and stopped, got out of his vehicle and crossed the westbound lanes of the highway. A 19-year-old Hemet driver was traveling westbound in the No. 1 lane and struck Soto. Paramedics responded, but Soto died at the scene. Meanwhile, the teenage driver was taken by ambulance to a hospital for minor injuries.
The police investigation determined that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The Menifee Traffic Reconstruction Team is heading up the investigation.
