Victims Identified as Ailyn Miguel, 12, Issac Briseno, 12, Maria Rodriguez, 58, and Jose Prieto 60
FONTANA, California (August 5, 2017) —Ailyn Miguel, 12, of La Puente, Issac Briseno, 12,of San Bernardino, Maria Rodriguez, 58, of La Puente, and Jose Prieto 60, of Rialto have been identified as victims of a deadly suspected DUI crash.
The four people were killed Friday afternoon in a collision on the Interstate 10 Freeway, just west of Citrus Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The four people were killed in the collision about 12:35 p.m. yesterday when the suspected drunken driver’s Nissan Frontier slammed into a disabled car on the shoulder of the freeway. Police say the car had stopped after it overheated and there were two children inside who were killed. A man who had pulled over to help the people in the Honda was killed as he stood outside the vehicle and a woman was also killed outside of the car. All four people died of their injuries at the scene. Prieto is being called a hero and a good Samaritan for pulling over to help the others whose vehicle was diabled at the scene.
A woman who as a passenger in the Honda and the driver of the Nissan were both hospitalized with minor injuries.
There is an ongoing investigation into whether the pickup truck directly impacted the people or struck the Honda and that vehicle hit the two people outside of the car.
There were beer cans found inside the pickup truck, hence police are attempting to determine if drunk driving was a factor.
Fontana DUI Crash Investigation
Police are attempting to piece together what led to this deadly collision. It appears based on evidence collected at the scene that the driver in the pickup truck may have been drinking. What authorities do not know yet is whether this was the cause of the crash or if something else such as a medical emergency or a mechanical failure was to blame. While driver errors are typically the cause of most crashes, there are many other factors that could lead to this type of crash.
If you or a loved one have been hurt in a collision, it’s advisable that you seek out medical attention and a qualified personal injury attorney for help. In the case of a wrongful death case, a family member would have legal grounds to file a claim separate from the criminal case against the negligent driver.
Our sincere condolences go out to the families of all those lost in this horrible collision.
