Alan Todd Fatal Crash National Trails Highway in Oro Grande Near Victorville

Pastor at Helendale Church Killed in Freak Accident

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (July 25, 2023) — Alan Todd, 66, of Helendale, died when a backhoe loader fell off a semi-truck and landed on his car on National Trails Highway at Polish Lane, just north of Victorville.

The deadly accident occurred around 7:18 a.m. on July 18th at the railroad bridge near the entrance to the CalPortland Oro Grande Aggregate Plant, according to the California Highway Patrol dispatch.

A 29-year-old Hinkley man was driving the semi-truck pulling a 2008 Trail King Low Boy Trailer loaded with a Caterpillar Backhoe. The truck collided with the railroad bridge and the backhoe fell off and landed on top of a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis sedan occupied by Alan Todd and his 63-year-old wife. The car continued traveling forward and collided with a tree near an apartment complex.

The man was trapped in the car and died at the scene. He was later identified as Alan Todd who was a pastor at Helendale Community Church.

The Victorville Fire Department assisted his wife who was injured in the accident. The woman had major injuries to one arm and her back. Paramedics transported the woman by ground ambulance to Victor Valley Global Medical Center. She was then taken by air ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center Center.

The family of the man who died has a GoFundMe account to raise money for his funeral.

Tow trucks responded for the damaged vehicles and authorities are inspecting the bridge to determine if it’s safe for trains to travel on it.

Investigators are working on the case and will determine if there are any criminal charges.
