Man Killed Tree Falls onto Car on Gayley Road Near Greek Theater
BERKELEY, Calif. (Jan. 7, 2019) — Alexander Grant, 32, of Novato, died Sunday afternoon when a tree fell on top of his vehicle, according to the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau.
The incident took place at 3:48 p.m., according to University of California police who responded to the scene at Gayley Road near the Greek Theater, The tree had fallen over on top of a vehicle and Grant was trapped inside it where he died at the scene.
It’s unknown what caused the tree to fall over, but it could have been weather related or due to dry rot.
The owners of the property where the tree fell have not been identified, but may be held liable for this man’s death under California’s premises liability laws. Indeed, the owner of a property where large trees are located must properly maintain them to ensure the public’s safety. The owner of such a property should know if there is a hazard and if they fail to act, could be held legally liable for any injuries or death due to their negligence.
