Alexander Rodish Caltrans Worker Killed in San Clemente Crash

Man, 55, Struck by Tow Truck is Identified

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (July 23, 2024) – Alexander Rodish, 55, has been identified as the Caltrans worker who died Monday when he was hit by a tow truck on the Interstate 5 Freeway in San Clemente.

“Caltrans mourns the loss of one of our own today. Alexander was a dedicated maintenance employee who was working to make our roads safer,” Caltrans Director Tony Tavares said in a press release “Our thoughts and support go out to his family, friends and colleagues.”

Since 1921, there have been 194 Caltrans workers killed on the job. The state capitol and all Caltrans facilities were lower their flags to half-staff in his honor.

San Clemente Pedestrian Accident

Three others suffered minor injuries in the traffic accident that occurred at 9:35 a.m. on the northbound side of the I-5 freeway, just north of Avenue Palizado, according to KTLA and the California Highway Patrol.

Prior to the collision, the victim was one of two Caltrans workers that pulled over to the right shoulder of the Interstate 5 Freeway. They stopped to pick up debris, but they were both struck by a driver in a Freeway Service Patrol tow truck.

The tow truck driver apparently swerved off the road and onto the shoulder.

The truck crashed into the Caltrans vehicle and then drove over Alexander Rodish, the report said. The Caltrans worker was fatally injured. Also, the Caltrans vehicle went airborne and collided with a silver Nissan Rogue that was entering the freeway from the on ramp.

The tow truck driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mission Hospital, the report said.

The second Caltrans worker had minor injuries and the driver in the Nissan suffered minor injuries.

Finally, Alexander Rodish began working for Caltrans in 2021 and at the time of his death he was an equipment operator II at the San Juan Capistrano maintenance yard.

He leaves behind two adult children, a sister and a brother.

Investigators are working on the case.
