Alfonso Vazquez Gomez, 34, Kills Pedestrian in Santa Maria Hit-and-Run Crash
SANTA MARIA, CA (July 15, 2021) – Authorities detained Alfonso Vazquez Gomez after a fatal hit-and-run crash on North Broadway in Santa Maria.
Police identified the 34-year-old Santa Maria man as the suspect in the collision which took place on Saturday night.
The incident happened on July 10 when Alfonso Vazquez Gomez was driving south on North Broadway in Santa Maria. At the same time, a male pedestrian was crossing the road from east to west.
Santa Maria police said Alfonso Gomez struck the man in his 60s in the 500 block of North Broadway. The impact threw the victim into the left-hand northbound lane of the roadway.
After some time, two additional vehicles going north hit the pedestrian. The Santa Maria Times and Noozhawk News wrote that the accident occurred at about 11:20 p.m.
Man Hit by Several Vehicles
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived and then found the victim left lying on the ground as a result of the collision. He died at the scene.
Meanwhile, police affirmed that Alfonso Gomez and the other two drivers did not stop to render aid and fled the area. They located him at a body shop in the city.
Authorities soon arrested Alfonso Gomez on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in injury/death to a person. They booked him into the Santa Barbara County Main Jail on driving on a suspended license for a prior DUI.
Officers are still looking for the other two motorists involved. They described one car as a small, single cab white pickup while the second as a dark-colored pickup with a large tool box in the bed.
