Woman, Dog Killed in Costa Mesa DUI Hit-and-Run Crash at Mesa Drive and Irvine Avenue
COSTA MESA, CA (September 6, 2020) – Authorities detained the alleged DUI hit-and-run driver in a crash that killed a pedestrian at Mesa Drive and Irvine Avenue Sunday.
California Highway Patrol determined that Ali Zohair Fakhreddine, 31, was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs when the collision occurred.
The incident began when the Riverside man was driving a 2014 Hyundai south on Irvine Avenue. CHP said he then allegedly ran a red light at the intersection with Mesa Drive.
In the process, Fakhreddine struck a female pedestrian walking her dog through a crosswalk in the intersection. The accident happened at about 6:34 a.m.

Paramedics responded and pronounced the Newport Beach woman and her dog dead at the scene. The name of the deceased victim has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.
Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that Fakhreddine did not stop to render aid and continued southbound on Irvine. Officers later located the Hyundai with damage to its right front due to the impact of the collision.
KTLA News wrote that authorities ultimately arrested Fakhreddine on suspicion of DUI and being involved in a hit-and-run crash. The tragic incident remains under investigation.
