Alvaro Alvizo Diaz, 33, ID’d as Suspect in Paso Robles Fatal DUI Crash on Highway 101
PASO ROBLES, CA (March 16, 2023) – Authorities detained Alvaro Alvizo Diaz after a fatal DUI crash on Highway 101 in Paso Robles.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 33-year-old Ventura man was under the influence of alcohol when the wreck occurred on Tuesday.
The incident began when Alvaro Alvizo Diaz was driving a 2020 Nissan Sentra east on Wellsona Road in Paso Robles. He then made a left turn into the No. 1 southbound lane of Highway 101.
CHP said the suspect continued in the wrong direction at about 65 mph. A 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck was going south in the same lane at the time.
Isaldo Arrelo Santiago. 38, Killed in Wreck
In the process, the Nissan slammed head-on into the Ford. The Tribune and KSBY News wrote that the accident took place on March 14 at around 11:18 p.m.
The driver of the pickup truck, 38-year-old Oxnard resident Isaldo Arrelo Santiago, died at the scene of the collision. Alvaro Alvizo Diaz sustained major injuries as a result of the crash.
Paramedics rushed him to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo for treatment. A passenger in the Sentra, 47-year-old Leopoldo Martinez, survived the incident with complaint of pain.
Medical personnel provided aid to the Ventura resident at the site. Meanwhile, officers soon placed Alvaro Alvizo Diaz under arrest for DUI.
CHP forced the northbound lanes of Highway 101 to shut down for hours following the wreck. The cause of the Paso Robles DUI crash is still under investigation.
