Alyson Akers, 50, Seriously Injured in Tour de Palm Springs Crash on Dillon Road
INDIO HILLS (February 11, 2018) – A Tour de Palm Springs bicyclist who was hit and seriously injured by a car Saturday has been identified as Alyson Lee Akers, according to The Desert Sun.
California Highway Patrol said the 50-year-old Huntington Beach woman was one of the two victims who were hit by a speeding driver on eastbound Dillon Road near Indio Hills.
As per the article, Akers and other several bicyclists were participating in the Tour de Palm Springs when a 2006 Ford 500 traveling at a high rate of speed struck them.
Akers was flown to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with major injuries and a laceration to her head. Another cyclist was killed in the crash.
The collision was reported at 9:25 a.m., south of Tinker Road.
Meanwhile CHP determined that the driver of the Ford, 21-year-old Ronnie R. Huerta Jr., was lost control of his car after approaching the westbound lane and driving off the roadway onto the dirt shoulder. The Desert Hot Spring man then veered back into the path of Akers and the other rider and went across the eastbound lane over a dirt berm.
Huerta suffered moderate injuries as his car ultimately rolled over. He was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center but was later arrested. The suspect is facing a charge of vehicular manslaughter and is being detained at the Riverside County Jail in Indio.
