SALINAS, California (June 17, 2016) —- Amanda Hernandez, 49, of Salinas and Fabian Sanchez III, 30, of Salinas were identified as the two people who died in a collision involving three motorists early Friday morning on the California State Route Highway 183/Castroville Road, just north of San Jon Road, the California Highway Patrol report said.
The fatal crash took place at 4:14 AM this morning in the southbound lanes of the freeway. Police suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash. The report stated that a Hummer H2 allegedly side-swiped a Mercury Saber and then veered into opposing traffic where the car crashed head-on into a Nissan Altima.
Hernandez was driving the Nissan and Sanchez was behind the wheel of the Hummer H2. Maria Rios Lopez, 21, of Salinas was a passenger in the Hummer and she suffered major injuries and was taken to Natividad Medical Center. The 19-year-old driver in the Mercury was not harmed.
Police issued a SigAlert and at least one vehicle was impounded for evidence. The crash is under investigation by police and report will be issued when it is complete.
