Passengers Aboard Amtrak Train Hurt
MOORPARK, Calif. (June 28, 2023) — Roughly 16 people were injured after an Amtrak train derailment in a crash with a County of Ventura public works truck near Highway 118 and Buttercreek Road.
The two-vehicle crash occurred around 11:18 a.m. on June 28th in the 11000 block of Los Angeles Avenue (SR-118), according to the California Highway Patrol.
A yellow Ventura County Public Works tanker truck was stopped at a level-grade crossing as its employees were nearby cleaning out a channel. The northbound 10-car Amtrak Coast Starlight crashed into the vehicle and three of the seven passenger compartments derailed, ABC 7 News reports. The train was traveling from Los Angeles to Seattle, NPR reports.
The Ventura County Fire Department responded to help injured passengers from the train.
The public works employee who was driving the truck was injured and transported to a trauma center.. Several train passengers suffered minor injuries and some were taken to a hospital. There were 186 passengers and 13 crew members aboard the train at the time of the collision.
Amtrak officials say they suspended rail service between Ventura and Los Angeles due to the crash.
There is an investigation underway to determine liability for the Amtrak train crash.
