Two Killed in Crash on 5 Freeway in Granada Hills Area
GRANADA HILLS, Calif. (August 16, 2021) – Ana Elena Moreno Santos, 33, of Los Angeles, is one of two people killed Sunday morning in a collision with a semi-truck on the Interstate 5 Freeway in Granada Hills.
Both Santos and Juan Carlos Menjivar, 37, of Winnetka, died when their car slammed into the back of a big rig truck parked on the right shoulder of the freeway, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
The deadly collision happened at 12:57 a.m. on Sunday, August 15th on the southbound 5 Freeway, just south of the 405 Freeway interchange, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Ana Elena Moreno Santos was a passenger in a silver 2010 Lexus driven by Menjivar traveling at a “high rate of speed.” As the car approached a curve in the roadway, the driver lost control and crashed into the rear of a parked, 2007 Dart International big rig truck.
Investigators seek to determine the cause of the crash and have not ruled out alcohol. The vehicle caught fire following the crash. Also, both people in the car were decapitated.
Meanwhile, there were no injuries reported by the 35-year-old Georgia man driving the big rig.
