Coroner Identifies 3 Killed in Newport Beach Crash
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (May 13, 2022) — Andrew James Chaves, 32, Crystal McCallum, 34, and Wayne Walter Swanson Jr., all died Thursday morning in a crash on Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach.
The deadly crash occurred when a Tesla Model S the three were riding in crashed into parked construction equipment along PCH on the Mariners Mile strip. The car reportedly struck a curb and then crashed into the equipment on the opposite side of the street.
Three construction workers in the area were injured in the crash.
All three people inside the Tesla died at the scene and the vehicle was totaled.
They were later identified as Crystal M. McCallum, 34, of Texas; and Andrew James Chaves, 32, of Arizona; and finally, Wayne Walter Swanson Jr., 40, of Newport Coast. The relationship between the three people is unknown at this time.
However, Andy Chaves was a singer in Tempe-based Katastro formed in 2007 with Andrew Stravers, Tanner Riccio and Ryan Weddle.
The injuries suffered by the construction workers were not considered life-threatening.
The crash remains under investigation.
