Bicyclist Struck by Vehicle, Killed in Griffith Park ID’d
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (April 18, 2022) – Andrew Jelmert, 77, died in a hit-and-run crash Saturday while riding a bicycle on Crystal Springs Drive and participating in a Griffith Park charity bike ride.
The suspect ran on foot from the fatal crash scene at 3:49 p.m. on April 16th, but was later arrested by park rangers, according to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Division.
The cyclist was participating in AIDS/LifeCycle’s SoCal Day on the Ride. He was traveling north on Crystal Springs Drive when a car heading in the same direction hit him from behind. The man fell off the bike into the roadway and died at the scene.
It was the fifth time Andrew Jelmert participated in the 67-mile ride that started at 7 a.m. with a mandatory safety speech and ended . He was a member of the team Different Spokes, according to event organizers.
Investigators are working on the case and will determine if drugs and or alcohol were factors.
The investigation is ongoing.
