Angel Manzo, 47, ID’d as Suspect in Atwater DUI Wrong-Way Crash
ATWATER, CA (June 27, 2022) – Authorities detained Angel Manzo after a DUI wrong-way crash on Highway 99 near Atwater.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 47-year-old Riverbank man was under the influence when the wreck took place on Monday.
The incident began when Angel Manzo was driving a 2014 Mercedes sedan south in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 from Westside Boulevard in Atwater.
He continued traveling the wrong-way in the No. 1 lane. As he approached Atwater Boulevard, he saw vehicles approaching him.
CHP said the wrong-way driver went into an opening within a construction zone and lost control of his car. In the process, he struck the center median.
1 Injured in Highway 99 Wreck
Four northbound motorists saw the suspect coming and took evasive action. The Merced Sun Star wrote that a three-vehicle chain reaction accident then occurred.
The collision occurred at about 1 a.m. Paramedics at the scene provided aid to one of the four victim drivers for their complaint of pain.
The report did not disclose the name of the wounded party and their condition at this time. Meanwhile, CHP arrested Angel Manzo on suspicion of several charges following the crash.
They arrested him for felony driving under the influence alcohol/drugs causing bodily injury and DUI .08 alcohol causing bodily injury.
Officers charged Angel Manzo with misdemeanor driving wrong way on divided highway and driving with license suspended or revoked for DUI. The Atwater DUI crash is still under investigation.
