Angel Mata, 49, Suspect in Santa Maria DUI Hit-and-Run Crash
SANTA MARIA, CA (June 30, 2021) – Authorities detained Angel Mata after a DUI hit-and-run crash on Highway 101 in Santa Maria.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 49-year-old Santa Maria man was under the influence of alcohol when the collision occurred.
The incident happened on Tuesday when Angel Mata was driving a 2002 Nissan Altima at a high rate of speed in Santa Maria. He was speeding in the left-hand lane of southbound Highway 101.
At the same time, a 2002 Chevy Silverado was traveling in the middle lane. CHP said Angel Mata drove onto the right shoulder, made a hard turning movement to the left and went back across the three lanes.
Jose Hernandez, 27, Injured in Highway 101 Crash
He struck the center divider wall, causing its bumper to be dislodged in the middle lane. The driver of the Chevy, 27-year-old Jose Hernandez, swerved into right-hand lane to avoid the bumper.
The Santa Maria resident failed and hit the front-end of the Nissan in the right-hand lane of Highway 101. The Silverado overturned, just south of the Main Street on-ramp.
The Santa Maria Times and Noozhawk wrote that the wreck took place on June 29 shortly before 3 p.m. Angel Mata and Jose Hernandez ended up with minor injuries as a result of the Santa Maria collision.
Paramedics took Jose Hernandez to the Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment. Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that Angel Mata left his car and fled on foot.
Officers found Angel Mata and soon arrested him on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run. The Santa Maria DUI hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
