4 Killed in Crash with Wrong-way Driver on I-80 Freeway
NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. (November 22, 2021) – Brittney Montano, 29, Antonio Montano, 29, and two of their three children, died early Saturday in a collision with a wrong-way driver on the Interstate 80 Freeway in Nevada County.
The deadly crash happened about 4:47 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21st near Eagle Lakes Road at the Yuba Gap, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Both Brittney, 29, and Antonio Montano, 29, were traveling with three children under 7 years old, but only the infant survived the crash. The family is from North Highlands, California.
Wrong-way Driver Suspected of DUI
A suspected DUI driver in a Jeep reportedly drove the wrong-way in the eastbound lanes of the Interstate 80 Freeway. The Jeep eventually crashed head-on into the young North Highlands family’s Honda Civic, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Firefighters and paramedics responded to the crash scene and confirmed that both adults and the two children died.
Meanwhile, the infant suffered undisclosed injuries and was airlifted to the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. Also, paramedics rushed the driver of the Jeep to the same hospital with major injuries.
Finally, a third vehicle became involved in the aftermath of the collision, but it’s unknown if anyone was hurt in that vehicle.
Investigators with the CHP believe that the wrong-way motorist was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
However, the fatal Nevada County crash is still under investigation.
