Overturned Big Rig Truck Hit by Semi-Truck on 15 Freeway in Apple Valley
APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (Jan. 20, 2020) — Michael Robert Keyser, 49, of Hesperia, was among two people killed Sunday morning in a fiery crash involving two semi-tractor trailer trucks on the Interstate 15 Freeway in Apple Valley.
The crash took place early Sunday about 4:15 a.m. on Jan. 19th near Hodge Road, according to Victor Valley News.
The California Highway Patrol was dispatched to the scene where they found an overturned semi-truck on the right shoulder of the freeway that had been struck by another big rig truck. The impact of the second collision caused the vehicles to become engulfed in flames.
San Bernardino County Firefighters responed to find both truck cabs completely destroyed. A hazmat team also responded because there was a placard that read “dangerous” on the burning Dominion Freight trailer. It was later found out that the cargo was pallets of cigarette lighters. The truck that overturned was empty.
Paramedics rushed one person by ground ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center. A second person turned down offers of treatment at the scene.
Two people were confirmed dead at the scene. One of them was a truck driver and the other was Keyser. Mr. Keyser had pulled over on the left side of the northbound 15 Freeway to help the truck driver. He walked across the southbound lanes and then a second truck hit the first big rig truck.
The California Highway Patrol closed down all southbound I-15 Freeway lanes for several hours.
The CHP’s Victorville station is heading up the investigation into the cause of the crash.
