Four motorcyclists who were friends and rode together regularly were traveling westbound on Los Berros at about approximately 3:45 p.m. Suddenly one of the riders accelerated too quickly and struck the back of the lead rider’s bike, Richard Tafolla, 27.
The rider who triggered the collision only being ID’ed as a 27-year-old Santa Maria man careened off the road and into a metal post. He suffered a major head injury and did not survive the impact of the blow and pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, Tafolla was thrown from his bike he had been operating, a 2004 Yamaha, sustaining a moderate leg injury and was transported to a local area hospital.
At this point, it remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role as the California Highway Patrol have been assigned investigation responsibilities.
