1 Dead, 1 Injured in Salinas Collision, Possibly a Hit-and-run
SALINAS, Calif. (Aug. 8, 2018) — Arturo Vega Jr. , 22, of Salinas, died early Wednesday morning in a collision at San Juan Grade and Herbert roads, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash took place about 4:27 a.m. Vega was driving his Infiniti G37 northbound at high speeds on a foggy night when he crashed into the back of a Dodge Ram 5500 Flatbed.
Vega’s vehicle was found off the side of the roadway. Upon their arrival at the scene, police found Vega in the vehicle with a faint pulse and was not moving. He died at the scene. A 17-year-old boy who was a passenger in the vehicle was found was bleeding from the face. Both of them were trapped in the vehicle, requiring extensive extrication by firefighters. The teenager, who is from Mexico, hospitalized with major injuries.
Juan G. Michel, 42, of Salinas, who was driving the Dodge, was not injured in the crash.
A full investigation into what happened is underway.

At this time, we do not know all the facts about this case. Police believe that speed may have been a factor in the collision, but that remains under investigation. It’s also possible that a mechanical problem or road condition that contributed to this crash as well. The investigation into this fatality should also look into whether the vehicle’s airbags contributed to either of the occupant’s injuries.
