Woman, 19, Seriously Injured in Crash on Highway 101
CUESTA GRADE (June 23, 2017)- According to the San Luis Obispo Tribune, a major injury crash left a young woman in serious condition Thursday morning on Highway 101 near Old Stage Coach Road.
At roughly 7:30 a.m., a Chevy pickup and a semi-truck were the involved vehicles.
Per the article, the driver of the Chevy, a 20-year-old man of Santa Margarita, had been traveling about 85 mph before failing to slow down and plowing into the rear of the semi-truck driven by a 78-year-old man of Arroyo Grande. The pickup then struck a guardrail just seconds after causing major injuries to the passenger.
The victim, a 19-year-old woman of Atascadero, was rushed to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and remains in the critical care unit as of Friday morning.
No information was provided regarding the condition of the 20-year-old man and whether he was taken to a hospital for treatment. California Highway Patrol officials were able to determine that alcohol was not a contributing factor.
Meanwhile, there was no indication that the 78-year-old semi driver was injured.
Only two lanes remained shut down for a few fours until reopening at around 10:00 a.m.
Based on this news report, it appears that the young man driving the Chevy will held liable for causing the collision. There are still several unanswered questions here. What caused the driver to fail to recognize that traffic was slowing down up ahead? Speed seems like it could have been a factor. Did distracted driving play a role as well? Was the driver negligent in any other way? We trust officials are looking into these and other factors in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.
In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing may have been a factor, the young woman may file a personal injury claim against her driver seeking compensation for damages including medical expenses and pain and suffering.
