ATWATER (June 30, 2016)- According to the Merced Sun-Star, a deadly DUI crash took place Wednesday evening at or near the cross streets of Redwood Avenue and Linden Street.

The incident occurred at 10:15 p.m. when the driver of a Chevy Impala collided with a Nissan Versa.

Both the driver and passenger inside the Nissan were found unconscious and non-responsive upon the arrival of paramedics. One of the victims was tragically pronounced deceased within a few minutes despite resuscitative efforts.

Per an update by the Merced Sun-Star, he has been identified as Augustin Pena, 46, of Atwater.

The second victim was rushed to Mercy Medical Center and is expected to survive.

Per the Merced Sun-Star, the driver of the Impala, Rigoberto Cisneros, 23, immediately fled the scene, according to his girlfriend.

Cisneros was later located and found at his residence with obvious injuries stemming from the collision. He attempted to cover up and insisted that he was not involved in the collision.

He was transported from his home to a hospital and was treated for his injuries. He faces multiple charged and remains jailed at Merced County Jail at this time.

Per the Merced-Sun Star, neither victim of the Nissan have been properly identified.
