Victim ID’d as James Dautrich, 49
ATWATER, California (March 25, 2016) – A hit-and-run crash sent a bicyclist to a hospital Friday night, according to California Highway Patrol dispatch team. (map)
CHP first logged the incident when a bicyclist was struck by a car on Shaffer Road, just south of Santa Fe Drive, at 8:25 p.m.
In an article by Merced Sun-Star, CHP identified the bicyclist as 49-year-old James Dautrich.
Dautrich was riding south on Shaffer when his bicycle was hit from behind. He was thrown from his bike, crashed through a barbed-wire fence and landed in a field on the west side of the road.
As per Merced Sun-Star, the 49-year-old cyclist suffered major injuries upon impact.
Meanwhile, the driver fled the scene. According to the dispatch, Atwater police described the suspect vehicle as a black Nissan sedan which obtained damage to its front following the collision.
Authorities are still gathering more information and evidence to be able to locate the hit-and-run motorist.
